The Land Of Milk And Marsh

In the North Sea, close to the German coast, around 100 people live on the Hallig Langeneß. A Hallig is an island formed from sediment that is flooded by the sea several times a year during storm surges. To protect themselves from these floods, the inhabitants live on artificially raised mounds known as Warften.I first visited a Hallig at the age of fifteen. During my stay, I met Matthias, a boy the same age as me, who said: “I want to live here for my entire life.” This encounter led me to question what it is like to grow up and live in such an isolated environment. As part of this project, I investigated life on the Hallig Langeneß, focusing in particular on the social rules and structures within the community. I also examined whether these social norms exist in other communities or if they are unique to life on a Hallig. The project was presented during the exhibition halb voll halb leer at Farbenladen and at Photo18 on Praterinsel in Munich, and was release as a self published book.
