The Land of Milk and Marsh

In the North Sea near the german coast around 100 people live on the hallig Langeneß. A hallig is an island that consists of alluvial soil and is flooded by the sea several times a year during storm tides. Protected from storm tides, the inhabitants live on the artificially built hills, so-called terps.

I was on a hallig for the first time when I was 15 years old. During my stay I meet Matthias, a boy in the same age as me who is saying: I want to live here my whole life. I started wondering: What is it like living in such an isolation? During this project I wanted to find out what social rules exist in the community and whether they also exist in other communities or are unique there.
